NO EYESERVICE

Philippians 2:12-13,15

Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear.

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.

The Lord brought us out of darkness into His marvelous light 1Peter 2:9, thus you hear Christ say:

Matthew 5:16 

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 5:14 

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Believers do not practice "eyeservice" this word is actually used in scripture - Ephesians 6:6. It is for secular work where the servant only works when the master is around.

Some do not do their work unless their supervisor is watching over them. It is an irritating attitude. In the case of the believer we see supposed brethren working to get the attention of their leader or pastor. It is a character thing, a real miss of the reality. They do it at their place of work, they do it among others, the live only to benefit from show-off. Then some bring it to church!

Paul admonishes that we should not be that way.

We must understand this:

Colossians 3:23-24

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.

We serve the Lord Christ.

Thus it is funny when we do eyeservice, is there a place you can hide from the Lord? Ah, the Lord cannot see me, O He is not here now, O let us not bring Christ into this etc. Listen:

Hebrews 4:13

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.

David gave a good expression of our master:

Psalms 139:2-4

You know when I sit down or stand up. 

You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.

You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. 

You know everything I do.

You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.

So how then can the believer be involved in eyeservice, when there is no place to hide from our Master.

That is why the element of our salvation is LOVE and FAITH!

It is a contrast to religion when we try to please man or a sect.

He, our master, Christ Jesus, empowered us to do the good things we do:

Philippians 2:13

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

That is why we must be careful not to err, one way is resisting all contrary thoughts that keep coming to our mind.

Philippians 2:14

Do everything without complaining and arguing,

Why murmur or complain when you can talk about it. Selah

So we understand that the world is evil, thus we live a different life and standard:

Philippians 2:15

so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.

That is the meaning of the light.

It is not over until it is, we continue till Christ returns (if we leave the world, Christ has already returned for us).

Our living is serious business, we cannot live anyhow as believers, we are truly the light and we must shine.

So help us Good Lord.

He calls us blessed.
