HONOUR YOUR PARENTS
Ephesians 6:1-3
Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do.
“Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise:
If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”
How happy are those who still have parents to seek advice from. Good parents are a blessing to any young one, yet still even when you have grown older they remain a sweet aura to you.
Good parents who have done good work on their children are blessed to have their children as their advisors in their older years. ". . . you reap what you sow".
God is interested in families and He respects the authority of parents. No spiritual leader is wise to ask any child to dishonour their parents.
It is so important to God that He attaches long life to it!
Exodus 20:12
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
The wise man taught that one's light is snuffed out when they insult their parents.
Proverbs 20:20
If you insult your father or mother, your light will be snuffed out in total darkness.
Christ Jesus pointed out how important it is to honour our parents. Listen:
Matthew 15:3-6
Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God?
For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’
But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’
In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.
Hmm.
We wonder why we feel so much pain (if our heart is not hardened) when they leave and we were not able to bless them with ourselves or what we have. It is meant for us to honour them.
Of course we have parents who have been a disappointment. Those who abandoned their duty post and have no trace to the development of their children. Their judgment is with the Heavenly Father. They will not escape.
However our duty as children is to honour our parents in wisdom and because we belong to God.
Colossians 3:20(NLT)
Children, obey [your] parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
And we do have other parents!
May God's Spirit always guide us aright.
