DON'T LET SIN IN
(2Samuel 11:1-27)
2 Samuel 11:1,4-5,15,26-27
In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem.
Then David sent messengers to get her; and when she came to the palace, he slept with her. She had just completed the purification rites after having her menstrual period. Then she returned home.
Later, when Bathsheba discovered that she was pregnant, she sent David a message, saying, “I’m pregnant.”
The letter instructed Joab, “Station Uriah on the front lines where the battle is fiercest. Then pull back so that he will be killed.”
When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him.
When the period of mourning was over, David sent for her and brought her to the palace, and she became one of his wives. Then she gave birth to a son. But the Lord was displeased with what David had done.
If you read the whole chapter, you see the painful things about the last verse:
"but the Lord was displeased with what David had done"
This is the supposed man whose heart was after the Lord. Yes of course we know he would have made mistakes here and there but this was really a terrible one.
"Adultery, then murder"
Remember:
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.
God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
The essence is that we do not make the same mistakes, instead we learn to do better than even the good they did. Selah
So what led to this?
The first verse says:
2 Samuel 11:1a
In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem.
The verse says it was when kings go to war!
Ask yourself do you always do the right thing?
Are you at your duty post when you ought to be?
You know most times we talk about being God's own but we are always found where God is not, why?
If it is prayers, we do not do!
Worship, we are not there!
Study of the scriptures, yet No!
Hello, who exactly are you?
I am not just talking about following routine prayers or programmes because you are seeking for something from God. No. I am talking of your personal relationship with God.
Is your heart really with God, all the time?
These are just the basics.
Even in all these, temptations will still come.
I have said this before, if the enemy could attempt to tempt God in the flesh, what height have you gotten to that you think he will not attempt to tempt you.
That is his work!
1 Peter 5:8-9
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.
Our duty is to resist Him!
Christ resisted Him, His disciples learnt to resist him and we must resist him.
James 4:7
So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Listen child of God.
Don't start it all, don't give the room and then begin to look for solutions later.
The counsel and advice may look childish or foolish to you at the beginning, but remember:
Proverbs 5:12,14
You will say, “How I hated discipline!
If only I had not ignored all the warnings!
I have come to the brink of utter ruin, and now I must face public disgrace.”
Proverbs 15:31-33
If you listen to constructive criticism, you will be at home among the wise.
If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself; but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding.
Fear of the Lord teaches wisdom; humility precedes honor.
Listen again child of God:
Most of the time the suffering we face is self inflicted, we may not need to look outside for the cause, we could very well be the cause of our own predicament.
Don't let sin in.
Look at the generation we live in. Sin has engulfed the world, the pain is that even the church is not left out.
Instead of following Christ, we want Christ to follow us. Our heart is never on God, we are always looking for the next wrong thing to do, yet when the obvious problem arises we run to God. How long will we continue in this foolishness.
So before we castigate David, I will always ask: are we any better?
Look at our society today:
* children rebel against their parents,
* wives don't want to hear the word "submit", they disrespect their husband, even to outsiders, they prefer to do the good outside while they want their husbands to carry the burden, no respect ,no honour, they are telling God that He doesn't know what He did, when He honoured marriage, yet they wonder why their marriages don't work?
Husbands are not faithful to their wives they prefer to have eyes for other women, they do not help and lead her to be a better person, leading her closer to God. They leave their role as the priest and king of the house, and they wonder why someone else has taken that place. As a father are they leading their children aright, have they allowed themselves to play the godly role in the lives of their children?
I speak of the family, because it is the smallest cell of the society and this is were the problem arises.
Ask yourself, are you doing well in that role you find yourself?
Never for one more moment think that you have grown above temptations, don't create room for it, the end is always sorrow!
1 Corinthians 10:11-12
These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.
If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.
Why is it so hard for people to stay faithful, why do we always seek for something to spoil good things, why do we always want to experiment with evil.
How long will you keep that evil heart, giving evil room again and again.
Say that today is enough. Come to the Lord with the sincere heart and receive that liberty that is due!
Isaiah 1:18
“Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow.
Though they are red like crimson,
I will make them as white as wool.
If we are really going to walk with God, there are things we must kill in our lives!
Read:
Colossians 3:5-6,8-10
So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.
Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming.
But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language.
Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.
Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
Hebrews 12:14-15
Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord.
Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.
Do not give the enemy room, remember his work is to destroy!
Give all the room you have to the Lord.
After all the mess, David sang this song:
Psalms 51:10-12
Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.
Oh help us Good Lord.
PRAYER
Loving Father, I am Yours, the enemy has no part in me, therefore it is You I will obey always. Keep me in Your obedience Lord, lead me not into temptation but deliver me from all evil. I love You Lord. Glory to Your name Lord forevermore.
He calls us blessed.
Love
