THE DISCIPLINE OF A LEADER

Deuteronomy 17:18-20

“When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy for himself this body of instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests.

He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the Lord his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees.

This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel.

The strongest book of knowledge a leader should have is the word of the Lord. One common thing about great leaders of Israel were their knowledge of the scriptures. The book of the law was to be the guide of the Jewish leader and today as believers the Bible is our guide as leaders.

As we will see when we move to the book of Joshua, one of the first instructions he received was:

Joshua 1:8

Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

Knowledge of scriptures is important for the believer and in scriptures is instructions concerning all things especially that which pertains to the kingdom of God.

We are not to study in laziness but with prayer and meditation, that God's Spirit will open our eyes to see what is in it.

As David prayed:

Psalms 119:18

Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.

The knowledge of God is important for anyone who will hold the leadership position for from there come wisdom and thus righteousness, justice and peace can be establish.

Proverbs 3:5-7

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.

Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom.

Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.

One thing you must learn as a leader is that the first person you lead is yourself!

Paul said:

1 Corinthians 9:27

I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.

After self the next point of leadership is in your immediate home.

Titus 1:6-8

An elder must live a blameless life. He must be faithful to his wife, and his children must be believers who don’t have a reputation for being wild or rebellious.

An elder is a manager of God’s household, so he must live a blameless life. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or dishonest with money.

Rather, he must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must love what is good. He must live wisely and be just. He must live a devout and disciplined life.

A man or woman of God must first be a good leader in the home performing their role in love, even children have instructions of how to behave at home. The beginning of good leadership starts from the home.

The next point of leadership could be the local community, school or even the church.

The decadence we see in our spiritual and secular leadership can be traced to our homes.

This matter has gone so bad that unbelievers, those we call children of darkness seem to do better than those who are supposed to be believers, children of light. It is terrible. For even Christ said it:

Luke 16:8

“The rich man had to admire the dishonest rascal for being so shrewd. And it is true that the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of the light.

We who have the light do not know or appreciate what we have, we foolishly allow the world dictate to us how to live and what to make priority.

This anomaly must stop if we are really going to finish well.

We must get back on track and hold on to things that are important.

2 Peter 3:17-18

You already know these things, dear friends. So be on guard; then you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own secure footing.

Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen.

Help us Good Lord.

PRAYER

Dear Loving Father help me be a good leader, starting from myself, my home, the church and then in my society and as far as you make me reach. May I be a testimony of You to the whole world. I will be disciplined and obedient to Your Word. Glorify Yourself in me Lord. Glory to Your name Lord forevermore.

He calls us blessed.

Love
