Hormah

Numbers 21:3

The Lord heard the Israelites’ request and gave them victory over the Canaanites. The Israelites completely destroyed them and their towns, and the place has been called Hormah ever since.

When the Lord gives a promise He comes through with it. We could have our shortcomings, make our mistakes or face challenges. When we bring His promises to remembrance the Lord acts on His word.

The people of Israel had done evil, they had rebelled against their God again and again, they even had a judgment on their head. Of the generation that left Egypt none will enter the promised land except Caleb and Joshua. However, that did not stop God from arising and giving them victory when they faced attack.

Numbers 21:1-3

The Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that the Israelites were approaching on the road through Atharim. So he attacked the Israelites and took some of them as prisoners.

Then the people of Israel made this vow to the Lord: “If you will hand these people over to us, we will completely destroy all their towns.”

The Lord heard the Israelites’ request and gave them victory over the Canaanites. The Israelites completely destroyed them and their towns, and the place has been called Hormah ever since.

I have always believed and said that we are the ones who could be unfaithful. God is ever faithful!

David in Psalm 138 said:

Psalms 138:2

I bow before your holy Temple as I worship.

I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness;

for your promises are backed by all the honor of your name.

Psalm 138:2 (kjv)

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

What do we take from this?

Remember:

2 Timothy 3:16-17

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

We must get to know God better. Know Him as faithful and we learn our faithfulness from Him. If I know His word and promises, I can confidently bring them to Him in prayer and surely He will stand by His promise.

One more thing, the children of Israel said:

“If you will hand these people over to us, we will completely destroy all their towns.”

Don't make oaths or promises to God rashly, be sure that you keep it.

Jesus said:

Matthew 5:33-37

“You have also heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the Lord.’

But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, ‘By heaven!’ because heaven is God’s throne.

And do not say, ‘By the earth!’ because the earth is his footstool. And do not say, ‘By Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the city of the great King.

Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black.

Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.

If you make a promise be sure to keep it, that implies that I should not make a promise or pledge merely out of emotion or at the spur of the moment, I must think it through!

I have learnt that with God there is no sentiment, He is not man, He is living and kind, that doesn't mean we can take Him for granted!

Listen, if you walk in His faithfulness, "hormah" is the portion of those who rise against you while victory is yours.

God is always faithful.

PRAYER

O help us Heavenly Lord to learn faithfulness from You, may we remain faithful to You through all times. Truly "Hormah" is the portion of those who come out to destroy us, while victory remains ours. Glory to Your name Lord.

He calls us blessed.

Love
