Idols and gods
1 Corinthians 8:6
But for us, There is one God, the Father, by whom all things were created, and for whom we live.
And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created, and through whom we live.
If you read widely, you would know of the stories about gods who have ruled here or there, many before Christ was revealed and also after He was revealed.
The question is, are they real?
Let us listen to Paul:
1 Corinthians 8:4-5
So, what about eating meat that has been offered to idols? Well, we all know that an idol is not really a god and that there is only one God.
There may be so-called gods both in heaven and on earth, and some people actually worship many gods and many Lord's
We can see that Paul's answer is not total. If you read an earlier verse you see:
1 Corinthians 8:2
Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much.
Okay, so what does God say about them:
Isaiah 46:5-8
“To whom will you compare me?Who is my equal?
Some people pour out their silver and gold and hire a craftsman to make a god from it. Then they bow down and worship it!
They carry it around on their shoulders, and when they set it down, it stays there.
It can’t even move!
And when someone prays to it, there is no answer. It can’t rescue anyone from trouble.
“Do not forget this! Keep it in mind!
Remember this, you guilty ones.
And another:
Psalms 115:3-8
Our God is in the heavens, and he does as he wishes.
Their idols are merely things of silver and gold, shaped by human hands.
They have mouths but cannot speak, and eyes but cannot see.
They have ears but cannot hear, and noses but cannot smell.
They have hands but cannot feel, and feet but cannot walk, and throats but cannot make a sound.
And those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them.
We notice something about idols, they are objects God created or what man devices out of what God created.
For instance, some will say they worship the sun, others the moon, still others a cow, tree etc all are creations of the one true God.
Some would also say they worship the god of iron, thunder, sea, etc. They all fall under the category of the false gods created from what the One true God has created.
Genesis 1:16-18
God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars.
God set these lights in the sky to light the earth,
to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
Some other category create something from an existing material and give it a name, it could be from wood, iron or other material.
These ofcourse are all a product of the imagination of the human mind.
Listen to this, man was not created a vacuum, there is a void to be filled and that void is the position of the Heavenly Father in that life, when this void is empty something else will fill it, most likely that thing will be an idol. This is the origin of religion!
(Know that some worship themselves - remember people like Nebuchadnezzar, they still also exist today, I do not need to name them, but once someone says you cannot have any religious practice in their territory except allegiance to them, they have made themselves gods!)
So can I talk about all that god's/idols entails in this devotional? No, do I know it all, No.
However, know that whatever you give attention to will attract a power which will fill that position you call. Remember what Jesus said:
Matthew 12:43-45
“When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, seeking rest but finding none.
Then it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds its former home empty, swept, and in order.
Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before. That will be the experience of this evil generation.”
This is why I fear for those who refuse to be guided by scriptures, who practice paganism mixed with Christianity, such as worship of Angels, the dead(saints), Mary, etc. Whatever God has not approved the enemies are fast to take advantage of. For every truth in God the enemy has his own lie version. Selah
So, what are we to do?
Concentrate on the only True God.
Only one person truly revealed Him, Christ Jesus:
John 1:18
No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.
He is the only mediator, beside Him there is no other:
Matthew 3:16-17
After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him.
And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
Luke 9:35
Then a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.”
Acts 4:12
There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”
1 Timothy 2:5
For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.
Revelation 1:5-8
and from Jesus Christ. He is the faithful witness to these things, the first to rise from the dead, and the ruler of all the kings of the world. All glory to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by shedding his blood for us.
He has made us a Kingdom of priests for God his Father. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.
Look! He comes with the clouds of heaven.
And everyone will see him— even those who pierced him.
And all the nations of the world will mourn for him.
Yes! Amen!
“I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.”
So are you holding on to any idol, it is time to let go. Salvation canNot be revealed and you let someone or something keep you in bondage.
Luke 4:18
“The Spirit of the lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free,
Let me quickly warn that there are some who come in the name of the Lord, but they are not His, but wolves in sheep clothing. Remember Christ's parable in Matthew 13:24-30, 37-43.
For:
2 Corinthians 11:14-15
But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve.
We must not be deceived!
One easy way to fall prey is pursuing signs and wonders when Jesus said:
"this signs shall follow those who believe. . . "
Help us Good Lord.
He calls us blessed.
