HOW GOD SPEAKS NOW

Hebrews 1:1-2

Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets.

And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.

Yesterday we looked at a topic "Is God silent?", looking through the book of Habakkuk. The prophet had questions about the troubles of Israel and the plunders of the wicked. He did receive a response.

When you read through the laws and the prophets and you get stuck trying to get meaning, you then understand the first four verses in the book of Hebrew. The speaking through the prophets was for our fathers of old, it related to what they faced at that time. However, it also brought hope of what God had planned for the time to come - the revelation of Christ Jesus.

That is why Christ told the religious leaders:

John 5:39

“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!

Some believe in messages sent by angels to the prophets in time past, however those messages all point to the same thing - Christ Jesus, He was the message.

Christ Jesus was not an angel, NO, He was the Son of God

Hebrews 1:4-6

This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names.

For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus:

“You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.”God also said,

“I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.”

And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said, “Let all of God’s angels worship him.”

(There is a write up of the Sonship of Christ in past devotionals)

So if you are going to hear what God is saying at this time, it must be what the Son is saying and consequently what the Spirit is saying. Christ said:

John 14:23-24,26

Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.

Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me.

But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

That is what the Holy Spirit does, He cannot contradict Christ but brings to rememberance what Christ has taught us.

Thus, what we have in the gospels and the epistles are truly valid revelation of Christ's teachings by the Holy Spirit, be they from the old testament or the new testament. Just as Christ dissected the law at the sermon on the mount, the Spirit helps us understand the laws and prophets and how the prophesies of today are fulfilled.

We see an example of the revelation of the law and prophets in the record of the acts of the apostles:

Acts 8:26-35

As for Philip, an angel of the Lord said to him, “Go south down the desert road that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza.”

So he started out, and he met the treasurer of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under the Kandake, the queen of Ethiopia. The eunuch had gone to Jerusalem to worship,

and he was now returning. Seated in his carriage, he was reading aloud from the book of the prophet Isaiah.

The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.”

Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?”

The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him.

The passage of Scripture he had been reading was this:

“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter.

And as a lamb is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.

He was humiliated and received no justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.”

The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, was the prophet talking about himself or someone else?”

So beginning with this same Scripture, Philip told him the Good News about Jesus.

If you will hear God, you will hear Christ, you will hear the Holy Spirit.

God yet speaks today, of things He has already spoken, they are interpreted, and even directions concerning specific things. Yet I ask again? Are you tuned to His frequency, do you have the Holy Spirit?

One of the first truth the Holy Spirit assures us is our sonship and inheritance via Christ Jesus:

Romans 8:14,16-17

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.

And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

Have you heard, are you listening, will you still listen? Then let others know the truth too.

Help us Good Lord.

He calls us blessed.
