Matthew 12:35-37

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart.

And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.

The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.”

A crucial question at that, "Does what I say matter?"

Importantly, Christ says it does, so it must.

Words are of course powerful. A simple analogy is how it hurts when someone insults you or says something negative about you. For the pain is not on the surface as it feels when you are hit, but it goes down to the heart. Thus Jesus taught:

Matthew 5:22

But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.

Yes the reason for wrong use of words is anger, thus anger must be checked.

Ephesians 4:26

And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry,

Further to this we have seen in not too recent times where curse and obscene words are used loosely by people even to the extent of greetings. They of course feel that it doesn't matter, does it?

Yes it does, Christ informed us in Matthew 12:36 that we will account for every idle word we speak. He further pointed out that by our words we would either be acquitted or condemned!

So I must be careful how I speak, I must teach my children, wards, and all those I have influence on to speak well. For it matters what they say.

We must understand that we are a being of habits, that which we do over time becomes a habit. Thus we must be intentional about what we hear, see or meditate on.

Romans 12:2

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

The power of words extend further than hurting others to our God nature, for by words the Father created, we also can create by our words.

Remember that our words display the content of our heart. Thus, we cannot be negative in speech and yet have a loving heart, it does not correlate.

We would no longer be people of unclean lips, our speech will be seasoned by grace.

Thank you Lord.

He calls us blessed.

Love
