REBELLION

Exodus 32:8-10
How quickly they have turned away from the way I commanded them to live! They have melted down gold and made a calf, and they have bowed down and sacrificed to it. They are saying, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.’”
Then the Lord said, “I have seen how stubborn and rebellious these people are.
Now leave me alone so my fierce anger can blaze against them, and I will destroy them. Then I will make you, Moses, into a great nation.”

The children of Israel at this time (Exodus 32) had experienced God,  from His glorious power he displayed in Egypt which led to their freedom from captivity, the parting of the red sea, manna and meat from heaven, victory at war and even God's presence at Mount Sinai.

They also had twice signed a covenant of obedience to His laws:

Exodus 19:7-8
So Moses returned from the mountain and called together the elders of the people and told them everything the Lord had commanded him.
And all the people responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has commanded.” So Moses brought the people’s answer back to the Lord.

and,

Exodus 24:3,7-8
Then Moses went down to the people and repeated all the instructions and regulations the lord had given him. All the people answered with one voice, “We will do everything the lord has commanded.”
Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it aloud to the people. Again they all responded, “We will do everything the Lord has commanded. We will obey.”
Then Moses took the blood from the basins and splattered it over the people, declaring, “Look, this blood confirms the covenant the Lord has made with you in giving you these instructions.”

Yet it only took forty days for these same people to rebel.

Exodus 24:18, 32:1
Then Moses disappeared into the cloud as he climbed higher up the mountain. He remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.”

What was wrong?

Hebrews 11:6
And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.

These people did not have their heart in God, they actually saw Moses as their God, many believers have made the same mistake, to make a man take the place of God. No matter what title that man bears, or how much the world or church recognizes Him or Her, your faith should be in the Heavenly Father.

Another thing is the reliance on elements, they wanted something physical to hold on to, today we see this same error in amulets, rosary or beads, cross, anointed oils, handkerchiefs, statues of heavenly beings, saints, yes, dead people, holy sites, black stone, incense burning some even books, the textual content even if it is the bible. This strong carnal nature of man to seek for a physical representation of the Heavenly Father or His Christ(Son).

This was why the Heavenly Father earlier warned:

Exodus 20:4-5
“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.

Today we see people who go around with a perceived picture of Jesus the Christ, STOP, there is no picture of the Messiah, what they carry around is a picture of a white Jew or that of an actor who played the character on a movie, the closest description of Christ Jesus is seen here:

Revelation 1:13-18
And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man. He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest.
His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire.
His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves.
He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance.
When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid! I am the First and the Last.
I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.

The error of rebellion begins from lack of faith, listen to Jesus:

Matthew 8:7-11
Jesus said, “I will come and heal him.”
But the officer said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.
I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to those who were following him, he said, “I tell you the truth, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!
And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world—from east and west—and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven.

(This pandemic has taught people this truth, the hard way. Selah)

The key against rebellion and idolatry is FAITH, it is not about what you see but what you believe.

What do we think Jesus will be looking out for when He returns?

Luke 18:8
I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?”

We must learn from the errors of the children of Israel and not make the same mistakes they made. False teachers and prophets exists today because of this same errors, they know people run after the so called signs and wonders. People search for heroes while some seek physical practices that will make them FEEL holy and acceptable to God. Who do you serve, whose are you?

Remember:

Ephesians 2:6-10
For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.
So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.
God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.
Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

I see a resurrected church, I see a people who seek the Heavenly Father through His Word, Jesus the Christ. That will not be misled by the world, religions or secular church but will put their faith in God.

May we be found worthy.

He calls us blessed.
