THE COMMUNION

Genesis 14:18
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he [was] the priest of the most high God.

The first mention of priesthood in the bible began with Melchizedek.  He was in no order of any lineage, though the record in Genesis did not give much details about Him, the writer of Psalm and Hebrews made reverence to Him. Even some interprete Christ reference of Abraham seeing His day to be significant to Abram's encounter with Melchizedek.

What is the significance of the priesthood, it is the linkage between the deity and those who worship.

Jesus became our priest, the one who meditates for us, cutting the lineage of priesthood. He remains alive thus there is no other priesthood than His. Selah

Hebrews 9:11-12,15,28
So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven, which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world.
With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.
That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.
so also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.

The old covenant is done away with.

Hebrews 10:1-7
The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship.
If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have stopped, for the worshipers would have been purified once for all time, and their feelings of guilt would have disappeared.
But instead, those sacrifices actually reminded them of their sins year after year.
For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
That is why, when Christ came into the world, he said to God,
“You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings.
But you have given me a body to offer.
You were not pleased with burnt offerings
    or other offerings for sin.
Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God—
as is written about me in the Scriptures.’”

Thus we do not need any other priest, neither do we need any other sacrifice or mediator, Christ has settled it:

Hebrews 10:12-18
But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet.
For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy.
And the Holy Spirit also testifies that this is so. For he says,
“This is the new covenant I will make
with my people on that day, says the lord:
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”
Then he says,
“I will never again remember
    their sins and lawless deeds.”
And when sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices.

Thus the reason for the communion is to remind us that one perfect sacrifice has been made:

Luke 22:19-20
He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.”
After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.

Just like in the days of Paul, some abused this ceremony:

1 Corinthians 11:17-20,26-30
But in the following instructions, I cannot praise you. For it sounds as if more harm than good is done when you meet together.
First, I hear that there are divisions among you when you meet as a church, and to some extent I believe it.
When you meet together, you are not really interested in the Lord’s Supper.
For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup.
For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself.
That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died.

Thus we must understand the essence of the communion and not sit on the table as Judas, the betrayer did.

Be it at home or in other gathering with other believers let us come with sanctified hearts, to celebrate the one perfect sacrifice. Glory to God.

May we always be found faithful.

The heart that comes is what is important!

Help us Good Lord.

He calls us blessed.

Love
@the watcher.
