SELFLESSNESS (THE GOD FACTOR)
Genesis 14:21-23
The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give back my people who were captured. But you may keep for yourself all the goods you have recovered.”
Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from what belongs to you. Otherwise you might say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich.’
Abram had returned from saving Lot and the other people of Sodom who were captives of war. He also collected plunders from the defeated king Chedorlaomer and his allies.
Genesis 14:17
And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that [were] with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which [is] the king's dale.
He was met by the king of Sodom, who asked him to return the people but keep the loot. However Abram had already made a pact with God that he will take none of the loot. He knew where his wealth came from, from the Lord. He was not out to take advantage of another.
Can we learn from this act of selflessness. Firstly Abram was not ready to hold grudges against his nephew who did not give him the deserved respect but thought he was wise to outsmart or prosper more than his uncle. Here we see his display of selflessness.
We just know Abram as a man of faith, we must understand that a man's faith is proved by his works.
James 2:22
You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.
This is the confusion that many young people create today. They speak one thing and act another. The question is, where did they pick up this character. What is being taught in our gatherings, at home, in school and by the media. We have a confused generation.
We desire the blessings of Abraham however our works are a direct opposite. For we seem NOT to be interested in glorifying God but in making a name for ourself.
Today a layman can easily debunk all our practices and make a mockery of what we call sacred because there is no power. People who ought to display God's power have been diluted with search and desire for earthly wealth, the desire to be relevant.
We must go beyond all these and understand as Abram did, that it is in God we put our trust.
Dear Father may You be our driving force, may our character reflect yours. For we know that our blessing and upliftment comes from Thee, both here on earth and in the life after. Glory to your name Dear Father.
He calls us blessed.
