BEWARE OF EARTHLY WISDOM
Genesis 13:8
And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we [be] brethren.
Genesis 13:10
And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it [was] well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, [even] as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
James 3:15
For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.
Reading the record of Abraham and his relation with his nephew Lot, we learn a great lesson. Observing closely, we see that Lot's father died while Abraham's father, Terah was still alive, thus leading to Terah taking Lot under his care.
Genesis 11:27-28,31
This is the account of Terah’s family. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot.
But Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, the land of his birth, while his father, Terah, was still living.
One day Terah took his son Abram, his daughter-in-law Sarai (his son Abram’s wife), and his grandson Lot (his son Haran’s child) and moved away from Ur of the Chaldeans. He was headed for the land of Canaan, but they stopped at Haran and settled there.
So when Terah died Abram naturally took Lot under his care.
It was also recorded that when God's instruction to move came to Abram, he took Lot along.
Genesis 12:1,5
The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.
He took his wife, Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all his wealth—his livestock and all the people he had taken into his household at Haran—and headed for the land of Canaan. When they arrived in Canaan,
It is obvious to see that Lot was indebted to his grandfather, Terah, and his uncle, Abram. Then how come he could ever have allowed a dispute between his herdmen and that of his uncle and benefactor Abram.
We see a lot of this insolence in our world again and again. It is still there today. When people feel they can ride over their benefactors. They are ungrateful and selfish. They think of themselves alone. They do not have respect for authority, neither do they consider loyalty of any importance.
It had to be Abraham who sought for peace, bringing himself down for his nephew. He made the sacrifice. Lot may have felt he had arrived, oh you have servants, I have too, you have wealth, I have too and so on.
Genesis 13:5
And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.
Is this wisdom?
James 3:16
For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.
It was Abram who sought for peace, he made the sacrifice and told Lot to chose!
Genesis 13:8-11
Finally Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not allow this conflict to come between us or our herdsmen. After all, we are close relatives!
The whole countryside is open to you. Take your choice of any section of the land you want, and we will separate. If you want the land to the left, then I’ll take the land on the right. If you prefer the land on the right, then I’ll go to the left.”
Lot took a long look at the fertile plains of the Jordan Valley in the direction of Zoar. The whole area was well watered everywhere, like the garden of the lord or the beautiful land of Egypt. (This was before the lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)
Lot chose for himself the whole Jordan Valley to the east of them. He went there with his flocks and servants and parted company with his uncle Abram.
Abram's action I will categorize as wisdom from above:
James 3:17-18
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.
And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.
Why wouldn't the Heavenly Father account righteousness to Abraham?
Lot's action I will categorize as earthly wisdom:
James 3:14-15
But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying.
For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.
The next verses describe many today, even among those who claim to believe, this should not be so.
James 4:1-3
What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you?
You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.
And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure.
We must walk with God's kind of wisdom. Many things we hold tightly today are indeed vain. "ASK LOT"
Our motivation speakers, in all forms be they teachers, pastors, mentors or even parents should be careful the way they drive and lead people under them. Many a parent have driven their children, especially the females, into destructive marriages all in the name of wealth and a brighter future.
That thing you got or are aspiring to get, and the only way you can get it is by betraying others or backstabbing your benefactor. Remember earthy wisdom doesn't end well.
We must CHECK! "what wisdom drives you?"
Dear Merciful Father grant us grace like your servant Abraham to excel by your Heavenly wisdom, may we not err. Help us Good Lord.
He calls us blessed.
