NUMBERING OUR DAYS (Psalm 90)
Psalms 90:1-2
Lord, through all the generations you have been our home!
Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God.
Most scholars attribute this Psalm to Moses. A prayer for God's mercy on His people, that they had suffered enough, for God to restore them.
When we read through, we see Moses acknowledging God for who He is. The one who existed before anything was formed, for indeed, He formed them.
Though man was formed from dust, but life in us was as of God's breath. So we ". . . lived in God. . ." even before we were born.
Genesis 2:7
And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
So Moses talked about God casting us off as dust:
Psalms 90:3
You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals!”
For even with those who lived in earlier times, who lived close to a thousand years, it still was brief, yes, nothing to the one who was ageless:
Psalm 90:4
For a thousand years in thy sight [are but] as yesterday when it is past, and [as] a watch in the night.
So what really is man, just a passing season. Like a grass that springs up in the morning but by evening is withered.
Psalms 90:5-6
You sweep people away like dreams that disappear. They are like grass that springs up in the morning.
In the morning it blooms and flourishes, but by evening it is dry and withered.
So what is wisdom?
Psalms 90:12
Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.
We understand that our time here is just a passing phase so we must make good use of it. What will be our testimony after, what will be our record?
Moses asked that God would make the people see His goodness, that they had suffered enough for their unbelief. For they saw the wonderful hand of God when He came to them, to set them free from their bondage in Egypt. However because of their constant unbelief and rebellion things were difficult for them.
Moses desired that they would see the true nature of God:
Psalms 90:16 (the message)
Let your servants see what you're best at - the ways you rule and bless your children.
This is why Christ was revealed, not just to the physical children of Israel at that time, but now to the whole world:
John 1:17
For the law was given by Moses, [but] grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
John 10:32
Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
Yes for Christ came to reveal the true works of the Father. Good works!
Ephesians 2:10
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
The true nature of God flows through all who believe to bring forth good works.
Philippians 2:13
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of [his] good pleasure.
Matthew 5:16
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Romans 2:10
But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
So we do not get long life to do evil but to do good. We do the will of the Father. Halleluyah.
2 Corinthians 9:8
And God [is] able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all [things], may abound to every good work:
Ephesians 2:10
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Colossians 1:10
That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
May none of our works go to waste.
Psalm 90:17
And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.
We bless you Heavenly Father for your Holy Spirit, in obedience and submission to His guidance, our good works will be established.
Bless the name of the Lord.
He calls us blessed.
