THE SALT AND THE LIGHT

Matthew 5:13-14
“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

We sing this song

". . . He came from heaven to earth, to show us the way. . . "

This was the testimony of Jesus:

Acts 10:38
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

This is the description of the salt and the light. God empowering us to give taste/savour and to bring illumination/truth to our world.

When Jesus said we should be this, He did not limit us to our efforts, or physical exertion, to show that we are better than others. NO, but we reveal God by doing and showing His very nature, and this we accomplish just like Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 5:16
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

The conclusion is we provoking men to give glory to God. Thus leading them to seek God.

Most times we confuse holiness with moral works. Moral works don't produce holiness but certainly holiness radiates moral work. How? Holiness is being set aside to God. The setting aside means we are separated to God. It is not a fleshly exercise but a spiritual repositioning we are controlled by His Spirit and not our flesh. It is fleshy to boast of moral works, it is not an achievement, IT SHOULD BE YOUR NATURE after you have received the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22-25(NLT)
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.
Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

Thus we are showing forth our nature when we shine our light, not trying to tell others that we are better than them, but to bring others into the love of God.

Please read Luke 18:9-17

Luk 18:11
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men [are], extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

We bring taste to the world as salts not ashes to the world:

Thus all our decisions, choices and actions are as a result of the leading of God's Spirit, it is not limited to moral works no, must times in trying to fulfil moral works we err not discerning, what the Spirit is doing. So the disciples were surprised seeing Jesus speaking to the Samaritan woman. They would also be surprised that He was going to the house of Zaccheus. The moralist, that is the pharisees and Sadducees also were surprised seeing him plucking grain to eat on the Sabbath day.

Two things is key:

1. Light/Illumination we bring the knowledge of God to the world and the only way we can fulfil this is if we are full of light ourselves, that is full of the Word of the Lord.

Psalm 119:130
The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

Revealing God's light entails knowing His Word. It is the knowledge of the truth of His Word that we reflect and teach the world, then they enter into this light also.

John 1:4-5(NLT)
The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

John 1:9
[That] was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

Jesus is the true light, that lighteth the world. Halleluyah.

2. Salt: synonymous to taste (check the dictionary definition of savor/savour)

Psalm 34:8
O taste and see that the LORD [is] good: blessed [is] the man [that] trusteth in him.

See what Jesus said:

Matthew 5:13
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

It is not what you try to be, NO, it should be your content. Selah!

You are the salt, you are not trying to give taste, you are the taste itself!

The Psalmist says it this way:

Psalm 119:103
How sweet are thy words unto my taste! [yea, sweeter] than honey to my mouth!

2 Corinthians 2:14&15
Now thanks [be] unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:

Glory to God!

So it takes a man who stays in the word of the Lord and lives by His Spirit to express this light and bring tastefulness to the world.

We live in times when the church has allowed the world shines its darkness and sourness into her. However we that know, must continue to reflect the light and bring the savour of God revealed through His Son and manifested through His Spirit to our world, wherever we are and where the Lord leads us.

Glory to God.

We are blessed.
