MORTIFY YOUR MEMBERS
Psalm 139:23 & 24
Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
And see if [there be any] wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
When we come to Christ Jesus we are reborn, something happens we receive a new birth, a new nature. God adopts us as His children.
John 1:12
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:
He then gives us His Holy Spirit.
To get more understand on this, we look at chapter 15 of the book of John.
John 15:1&5
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
I am the vine, ye [are] the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Thus the new birth is us springing up from Christ Jesus who is the tree in this illustration.
Now the issue still remains that we still have the power to decide, if we would abide in Him bearing His fruit of righteous, or to fulfil the lusts of the flesh.
What?
Romans 8:13
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
FOR WE ARE A BEING WITH THE POWER OF CHOICE!
So we must:
Colossians 3:5
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
In the past we walked in them:
Colossians 3:7
In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
However now that we are of Christ:
Colossians 3:8 & 9
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
But now:
Colossians 3:10
And have put on the new [man], which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
So we have a new image and a new knowledge. We killed the former knowledge we were born in also those we learnt from the world and put on the new one that God gave us by His Word and Spirit.
Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
As basic and simple as this teaching is, some miss it and spend their lives as believers struggling over one thing or the other.
I love Jesus:
John 15:3
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
We are empowered to MORTIFY (to kill, to discipline, to reduce its potency, abstain) the flesh.
By His Spirit.
Galatians 5:16
[This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
There is a living in the spirit and the walking in the spirit. Selah
Galatians 5:25
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Yes, it begins when you understand it and take action!
PRAY!
You are blessed
